experience. expertise. client focus.

In the past 30 plus years, Benjamin Nutter Architects has transformed over 400 homes and landscapes in New England. As Principal Architect, Ben Nutter works closely with his talented team of architects and designers providing even more expertise to a project. A team approach allows every detail to receive the careful attention it deserves, right down to the color of a light switch! Each member of the Benjamin Nutter Architects team has one goal in mind, to provide each client with their dream home.

As every client is different, every solution is different. This approach has built an extensive knowledge of architectural styles seen throughout New England. Whether it be a first period home from the 1700’s, a hay barn for a dairy farm, or a contemporary oceanfront retreat, we have done it! As times change, so do design and construction practices. We are constantly evolving our design and construction philosophies to stay current with today’s requirements for energy conservation, reducing maintenance, and creating buildings to survive another 300 years. We appreciate this is accomplished by establishing a team of superior craftsman and other professionals to form a project team. Working with others is another example of our versatility.

Client Focus

Architecture originates in thoughtful dialogue between client and architect. Our philosophy is to form a relationship with every client. It takes trust and understanding to be able to take an idea and create a design that will last a lifetime. Every client is unique, so naturally, every project is just as unique. Over the years, many clients have completed more than one project with us – a testament to our ability to deliver their dreams.

our history

Benjamin Nutter Architects was established in 1984. Ben Nutter, Registered Architect in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, opened an office in his home town of Topsfield.

Ben graduated from Vermont Technical College and The University of Oregon. He was affiliated with Royal Barry Wills Associates, Boston, for five-years and the architecture and construction firm of Lindentree Corporation, Hamilton, for four years.

The incorporation of New England architectural details and environmental design features have become typical of projects in new construction, as well as renovation and additions. This includes the completion of many residential and commercial projects throughout New England.

Combining contemporary and traditional designs, Benjamin Nutter Architects works closely with clients. Sensitivity to the design requirements of each project assures a quality architectural service. The positive rapport established during a professional relationship is valued. Completed projects reflect an attention to aesthetic and functional considerations, as well as providing comfort and a sense of pride for the Owner and Architect.

Ben has been associated with New England farming and architecture throughout his lifetime.  The Nutter Tree Farm was established by his parents.  In 2010, the farm celebrated 50 years of selling Christmas trees to local customers.  Tree farming connections led to Ben’s first position as an intern architect.   William Dorman, a tree farmer in Boxford, introduced Ben to Dick Wills, the son of Royal Barry Wills.  The Topsfield office of Benjamin Nutter Architects LLC is located on the Nutter Tree Farm.
